The Inn at Shady Lawn is an iconic fixture in the Newland and Avery County communities. For over 65 years, the prior owners, the Ray family; provided hospitality to travelers visiting passing through our quaint, small but gorgeous area.

In December of 2021, Nathan and Suzzannah Gittner, purchased "The Inn at Shady Lawn", with a bold, bright and innovative vision and plans of continuing and expanding the Ray family’s legacy of hospitality.

 

Sneak Away to Serenity

Newland, North Carolina is in an idyllic setting with a rich history. Newland is the county seat of Avery County, North Carolina and is the Fraser Fir Christmas Tree Capital of the world and is in the ski capital of the south. Our immediate area is a destination that captivates visitors year-round. As you explore this enchanting area, you'll be met with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We have a true country cafe on the grounds that offers southern dishes as well as southern hospitality.

The Inn at Shady Lawn is conveniently located close to both Sugar Mountain Ski Resort and Beech Mountain Ski Resort. Come July, you may notice kilt-clad folks mingling about, as The Grandfather Highland Games and the Gathering of the Clans is located within a few miles of the inn. Come October, people are gathering up their local fabulous find of a Woolly Worm, a caterpillar that is the centerpiece of the internationally known Woolly Worm Festival held in neighboring Banner Elk, NC. Summertime offers great golf, fishing, mining, mountain biking, mountain hiking, and rides on our two ski resort chair lifts allowing regular folks to experience being on top of the mountain without having skis on.

We are a convenient stopping off place for folks traveling along the Blue Ridge Parkway exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains or visiting an abundance of area attractions, The Inn at Shady Lawn offers the perfect mountain retreat in western North Carolina's High Country.
